Additional Breakdown: Live Recordings 1973 Information
|
Short-lived and with only a limited output, this five-piece bluegrass band nevertheless helped spread the gospel of this extraordinary genre via the famous coattails of its most notorious member: Jerry Garcia. However, they were no novelty act. Breakdown is the second posthumous release culled from a series of 1973 concerts in San Francisco. At a robust 70 minutes, the album flows like a complete live set, featuring scrumptious musicianship and harmonious camaraderie. Much better than the eponymous debut from 1975--and a perfect second volume companion to 1996's equally worthy That High Lonesome Sound--Breakdown features covers of greats Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs, originals by the band's guitarist Peter Rowan, fiddler Vassar Clements and banjoist Garcia. A must own for any fan of acoustic music and a great primer for bluegrass neophytes. --Greg Emmanuel

I didnt realize how much Jerry liked Bluegrass until I listened to those old takes. I recieved versions of these songs as they were passed around on dead net. I knew Bill Monroe and Flatt and Scruggs had some influence on what he played becuase I like them as well. There was even some songs that they did over a radio station in SF. Ive liked the Dead for a long time. Thanks to Old and in the way for those sweet songs Ill never forget how 'Panama Red' and 'Wild Horses' was done on those old takes. Keep it rockin guys.
My casstte of OLD AND IN THE WAY self destructed and I had to replace it. This is what I found after searching. The playlist isn't in the same order and there are a few extra tunes but boy was it good to get this back again. Vassar Clemens and Jerry Garcia never sounded better.
The cd was in great shape and was exactly as represented. Quick shipping. Thanks
Midnight Moonlight is one of my favorite songs, and all the traditional bluegrass songs on the album are done with authentic feeling and breakneck speed when it's called for. I didn't know Jerry played banjo or did it so well, even missing a finger. Old and in the Way surprised me when I first heard it. Within 2 minutes into the cd, it feels like porch-pickin' is breaking out. I didn't know Vassar Clements hung out with people like Jerry and vice versa. I must say, they pull off the "high lonesome" sound so well. Shipment arrived on time and plays fine. Get this album and/or the other one they did (that I know of).Peace
Great Bluegrass music. A must have for the fan of the genre.
